The history of Jane's Hunger Paynes goes back a little over 31 years. In December, 2008, the restaurant changed owners for the fifth time.
In June, 1978 the restaurant opened, in downtown Crestline, with the name 'Barrel's Restaurant & Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor" Many in Crestline simply called it 'The Barrel.' From 1983-1990 it was owned twice by local residents and in 1990 the Paynes purchased it. With a new name, 'Seltzer Station Restaurant' they were so successful that the business outgrew the location. In 1997 a move was made to a newly constructed building at 819 E. Main St. with a new name "Hunger Paynes."
Twelve years later Ed and Jane Ank purchased the restaurant, adding 'Jane's' to the name, thus "Jane's Hunger Paynes" was born. The decision to keep the 'Hunger Paynes' portion of the name was in memory of Jerry Payne, founder of Hunger Paynes. Jane and Jerry were high school classmates and friends. Unfortunately Jerry passed away shortly after moving to the new location.
December 1, 2008 Jane's Hunger Paynes officially opened and the response from Crestline and the surrounding communities was overwhelming. During the first six months of operation there were some changes made which included a new menu, over one hundred |

Ed grew up in Pennsylvania and lived and worked in the Cleveland area before relocating to Richland/Crawford County. Jane grew up in Ontario and lived in Crestline prior to her marriage to Ed when she relocated to the Cleveland area. Returning to the area, they live in the house where Jane grew up and enjoy being closer to family and friends.
They have a blended family of five sons, Jake Beck, Todd Ank, Chad Ank, Jason Beck, and Greg Ank along with six (almost seven) grandchildren, Christian, Michael, Bree, Cammi, Jay and Gregory (also known as Little Eddie).
Jane's Hunger Paynes is truly a family restaurant when it comes to employees as Jane's Mother, Dorothy Rhodes, her brother, Roger Rhodes and close friends/almost family Tom Mitchell and Sandi Wentz pitch in when needed! |

The Anks' primary goal is to provide a family-type atmosphere along with good quality cuisine, including generous portions, at affordable prices. Their personal philosophy for success is to treat customers and employees as they would like to be treated.
Stop in and see what the Anks' have done and try out something from the new menu! Ask if Ed or Jane is available and introduce yourself! They love to know their customers by name!! |
